The Eastern States Exhibition (the “Big E”) is essentially New England’s mega-fair. And I’ve had plenty of success with my photography entries in this show. Last year wasn’t as successful; one of my two entries was bounced; while the other earned an honorable mention. Which means … I must try harder.
Here’s my problem. The Big E will only accept two photos from me – three images if one of the captures was taken on a Massachusetts farm. But I did NOT take any photos on a Massachusetts farm. So I’m kinda limited in my options.
And my plans for capturing something distinct for the Big E got thwarted by weather – a planned Milky Way shot was ruined by clouds, and a trip to New York City to capture Manhattan-henge was ruined by a thunderstorm. Ugh.
So I’m going with two pieces that were submitted elsewhere, and hoping for the best.
As it is, I have one hammer piece that I’m submitting for Springfield this year.
You know it, I know it.
HOW GOD SEES AN ECLIPSE

Yes, this image has made the walls at Iowa and at Altamont, but it hasn’t claimed an award yet. But I can’t give up on this image.
And where do I go with the second image? Do I lean toward one of my macro shots like the Boy Scout Eagle badge Be pRepaired, or my microscopic capture of a Longines lady’s watch 17 Jewel Movement? Do I lean toward an infrared capture like The Sacandaga River Crossing? Or do I go with an image that hadn’t been entered previously this year?
Decisions, decisions, de-freakin-cisions.
And in the end … I went with …
Be pRepaired

Look … the eclipse one is a hammer picture, and the Boy Scout Eagle badge photo is my true attempt at a still life capture.
So let’s hope for the best, shall we?
UPDATE –
As I was penning this blog post, I received word from the Big E that one of my pictures was accepted, and the other one was not.
And surprisingly … the one that was accepted for display was … Be pRepaired.
Wow. My eclipse “hammer photo” isn’t exactly driving in nails.
But my first-ever true “still life” photo made the cut. So I’m happy for that.
Plus, I have one surprise entry that’s NOT part of the photography discipline.
What is it?
Not telling.
Trust me. You’ll love it when you see it.
